Some background on Sue:

Sue has been sewing since her first 4-H project at the age of 10. Her proficiency in this art resulted naturally from a lifetime of sewing for herself, and her home, her four children, and now ten grandchildren. Her enthusiasm for sharing the life skill of sewing and quilting with others is her passion, and for more than 40 years her profession focused
on sewing education.
Sue and her husband Herb travel together presenting “Sew and Quilt with Sue” programs across North America. Sue and Herb enjoy sharing the joy of sewing and quilting and meeting new friends.

Kidz Kamp

Back by popular demand: our fabulous Kidz Kamp. Here is the perfect opportunity to introduce the young people in your life to the wonderful world of sewing and quilting. The emphasis in Kamp will be on having fun while developing a love of sewing and the skills needed to turn that love into the passion we share for creating with needle and thread.

Kidz Kamp is open to everyone ages 8 to teens. Kidz Kamp is project based so Kampers will be polishing their skills while working on different fun projects. Most Kidz will finish 4 projects as they learn a variety of sewing machine techniques. All supplies will be provided, you only need to bring a snack (sewing and eating just seem to go together!).

Kidz Kamp will be offered three times this summer, July 12-15, August 2-5 and August 23-26, from 10:00 am—12:30 pm. Sign up for one two or even all three sessions!

There are different Kamp packages available, so you can choose the right option for your Kamper. See details below or call or visit the store for complete information about the packages and costs and enrollment forms.

Kidz Kamp Details

The cost of each 4 day week of Kidz Kamp is just $399 including a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 sewing machine so you can continue creating after Kamp is over. (see details below). This package is all inclusive. In addition to the Emerald 116, you will receive 10 hours of sewing instruction, all patterns, fabric, sewing supplies and other material needed for Kamp projects. We have alternate packages available as well, if the Emerald 116 doesn’t fit your needs. With our bonus packages, you get 10 hours of Kidz Kamp for just a little more than the price of the sewing machine!

The packages available for Kidz Kamp this year are:

The Intro ($399) includes a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 (Great introductory level machine with built-in needle threader, easy buttonholes, basic utility stitches and hard cover for storage.), 10 hours of Kidz Kamp, all patterns, fabric and supplies needed for Kamp projects.
The Creative ($499) includes a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118 (Same as 116 with more stitches, speed control, and needle up/down.), 10 hours of Kidz Kamp, all patterns, fabric and supplies needed for Kamp projects.
The Deluxe ($649) includes a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 183 (User friendly, computerized sewing machine with, speed control, needle/up down, built in needle threader and hard cover for storage. Many other great features included: programmable stitches and alphabets, push-button stitch selection and more.), 10 hours of Kidz Kamp, all patterns, fabric and supplies needed for Kamp projects.

If you have a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine that you wish to sew on instead of the classroom machines, you are welcome to bring it with prior approval of the instructor.

You may also choose to attend Kidz Kamp for $249 without purchasing a sewing machine (may require sharing a sewing machine). If you sign up for multiple sessions the cost of the second or third session is reduced by $50.

At the time you enroll in Kidz Kamp, you need to specify which package you would like. Because all machines must be pre-ordered, no changes in package will be possible after enrollment. Maximum enrollment is 10 and minimum enrollment is 4 students. If a session does not have the minimum enrollment (it rarely but occasionally happens), we’ll try to let you know at least two weeks in advance so that we can enroll your child in another section.

Cancellation Policy: Please check dates carefully before signing up. With a minimum two-week notice, you may transfer your enrollment to another session if there are openings. There will be no refunds or credits given, except for cancellations on our part. No exceptions.

Enrollment form must be filled out and all fees paid to reserve your spot in Kamp. Download the enrollment form here, or call, email or come in today for more information or to sign up for Kidz Kamp.

Gypsy Quilters Sit and Sew Block of the Month

Here’s a fun new idea—a sit and sew block of the month. Instead of picking up your block of the month, taking it home and putting it in the cupboard to work on “soon”, join Nina Anderson’s merry band of Gypsy Quilters and actually complete your quilt in a year—well, almost!

The first month you will meet with Nina and get her expert advice as you choose the perfect fabrics for your quilt. No agonizing about colors or patterns. Nina’s great eye for color and years of experience pulling quilts will make this planning meeting a joy!

Then spend a fun filled Saturday morning each month for twelve months cutting and sewing together each block. You will learn many great techniques like template cutting, sewing in the round, inset seams and much more. There might even be some surprises!

You will finish one block each month. When the blocks are finished, you can put them all together with the provided instructions or join Nina for a final, optional session (for a small additional fee) to choose your borders and put it all together. You can also choose your backing and all you will have left is quilting and binding. This BOM (Block of the Month) won’t become a UFO (UnFinished Object)!

The Gypsy Quilters will meet on Saturdays from 10:30 am-1:30 pm, July 31, August 28, September 25, October 30, November 27 (and continuing in 2011).

The cost for the entire thirteen-month series will be $150 (does not include cost of your pattern and materials).

Space is limited, so don’t be disappointed, sign up today!

Would You Like to Lend a Helping Hand?

At Luella’s we love to help others and we know that quilters are very generous people, so we have several ways for you to help others. For more information on these worthy efforts, see our website (go to Special Events and then Helping Hand).

We are pleased to be able to support the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The goal of this dedicated group is to cover all wounded and injured service members with handmade Quilts of Valor. This quarter we will be hosting a workshop for Quilts of Valor on Friday, July 23 from 4:00 pm to10:00 pm. Come for any or all of the workshop and support this wonderful group. If you can’t make it that evening, you can drop off any orphan blocks or quilt tops that you would like to donate for others to finish for Quilts of Valor. We are happy to accept finished quilts for them as well.

We are also a collection point for Project Linus. Their mission is to collect handmade quilts and blankets for children of all ages. For more information on the specifications for these quilts, see our website.

Luella’s Quilt Club has an ongoing effort to collect quilts for NICU’s in the local hospitals. The preemies really love those quilts (and so do their moms and dads).

Luella’s Quilting Retreats at Temecula

Is it time to get away and spend a fun weekend with friends doing something you love to do? Have some projects you just can’t seem to find the time for?

Join us for Luella’s Quilting Retreat in Temecula for some dedicated sewing time! We have a summer retreat scheduled this year and a spring retreat planned for next year. The summer retreat will be August 12-15, 2010. As of press time, we didn’t have the dates scheduled for
the spring retreat. It will probably take place sometime in early April. Check our website or call after mid-April for more information.

The Temecula Retreats are a wonderful opportunity to spend concentrated time on that new project you want to get started on or dig into that pile of UFO’s you’ve been accumulating. Join us for a long weekend of sewing amid the rolling hills of the Temecula wine country. The setting is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed and the company is second to none! The sewing room is bright and cheerful, the sleeping rooms are comfortable and the food is plentiful and tasty (and someone else cooks it and cleans up!).

The cost of the August, 2010 four day retreat (Thursday through Sunday) is $400. There is a three day, two night (Friday through Sunday) option available as well for $320 (believe me—you want to go for that extra day!). The prices for 2011 retreats have not been released yet, but we expect if there is an increase it will be a modest one. If you would like to go on one of our retreats, give us a call to sign up. Spaces are limited so don’t be disappointed.
